Whew! What a loooonnnngggg day! We did a two day workshop in one day today and I am exhausted. The Arkansas Game and Fish does a "Hooked on Fishing not on Drugs" program that is sponsored by the Future Fishermen Foundation. Basically what the program is about is creating a way for kids to "hook" up with a caring adult through fishing. The students, through fishing clubs, learn angling skills and participate in conservation activities.
In our workshop, we participated in a few of these activities. We designed a lure to fish with under certain conditions which is a lesson designed to be an applied learning lesson. Meaning the student learns the habits of a particular species of fish and then applies this information to a set of provided conditions to design the lure. At the end of the lesson the student presents his/her lure design to the class and explains why the design is good for those prescribed conditions.
The next lesson was on fish identification and anatomy. Yes this included disection of a farm raised catfish. Some of the fish provided were quite large. Later we learned how to cast and how to teach someone to cast.
