Several member of my PLN have requested that I post the information regarding survivor science. So this blog will be devoted to that request. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to email me or comment on this post. First, though I wish to give credit to Tracy Trimpe. She has inspired me to pursue this avenue as a style of reviewing for semester tests. I have taken her idea and modified it to fit me and my classroom. This semester marks the 5th semester that I have used this technique to review my students for semester tests. I have seen a marked improvement in student participation and score improvement.
Day 1: Go over rules and expectations:
Tribes
Each class will be split into several tribes of 3 to 4 students.
Tribes will work together during the challenges to earn points or rewards.
Each challenge will be worth a homework grade that will be included in your grade for this class.
Inappropriate behavior or distruptive behavior will result in the elimination of the tribe from the competition.
Immunity Challenges
Challenges will relate to topics we have studied this year.
Teams will earn points based on their efforts.
The team with the highest score will earn immunity, which means they cannot lose those points at the next Tribal Council.
Reward Challenges
Challenges will relate to a wide range of topics.
Teams will earn rewards for their efforts.
The team with the highest score will earn the reward and a bonus of 10 points for their team score.
Tribal Council
After each immunity challenge, tribes will vote for one team to lose the points earned on that challenge.
Each tribe will have only one vote during each tribal council.
Tribes cannot lose points from previous immunity challenges!
Expectations
Good sportsmanship is expected at all times. Play fair!
The teacher’s decision is final.
Alliances are ok, but be careful that they don’t hurt your tribe in the long run!
The expectations are very important. Ninth graders can be mean and the teacher must stay on his/her toes to ensure good sportsmanship.
Divide classes into tribes, pass out totems and allow the students time to derive tribal names. Then let the games begin! First up Teacher Trivia.
